How many FIRs lodged against Muslim men under anti-triple talaq law, SC asks Centre
The Supreme Court ordered the Centre to collect the total number of criminal cases registered against Muslim men under a law which penalises declaration of triple or instant talaq. The utterance of triple talaq was declared “null and void” by a Constitution Bench in a majority judgment in August 2017. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 came into force with retrospective effect from September 19, 2018. The law held triple talaq to be a non-bailable offence punishable with three years’ imprisonment.
Chief Minister’s post in Tamil Nadu remains elusive for Scheduled Castes
Despite Scheduled Castes (SC) constituting 20% of Tamil Nadu’s population and accounting for at least one-fifth of the population in 17 out of 32 districts as per the 2011 Census, the top political post — Chief Minister — of the State has remained elusive for the community. This assumes relevance in light of a recent observation by Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, who has been having a running battle with the DMK government on a number of matters, that the State should have an SC Chief Minister in the future. It has been a long-standing grievance of SC activists that the community has not been given prominence in appointments of political posts to the extent it deserves, unlike in many other States.

Former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s elder son has been indicted in the High Court for alleged misappropriation from an Indian investment before 2015. Namal Rajapaksa, 38, was arrested in June 2016 for the alleged misuse of 70 million Sri Lankan rupees from the Krish hotel project money to develop the game of rugby, for which he had been a Sri Lanka international player.
