5. China says, it supports India in hosting BRICS 2021
China said it supports India in hosting this year’s BRICS meeting. This will be the third time India will host the BRICS Summit after 2012 and 2016.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told media in Beijing on Monday that China will work with India and other members to strengthen communication and dialogue and consolidate cooperation and work for greater progress under BRICS.
He said, China attaches importance to BRICS mechanism and is committed to deepening strategic partnership within it to consolidate solidarity and cooperation.
BRICS is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2021, but it will be the 13th BRICS Summit which India is chairing. Last week, EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar launched the website brics2021.gov.in for it. The theme for India’s chairship is ‘BRICS @ 15: Intra-BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation and Consensus’.
Within the BRICS, during the last one year, relations were fraught with many tense moments specially between India and China when both the armies clashed near the LAC in eastern Ladakh. Now only India and China are undergoing disengagement at various friction points being watched cautiously.
Brazil on its part was critical of China on matters related to COVID-19. Even then, all the leaders attended the 2020 BRICS Summit which was held virtually under Russian chairship.
India also hosted SCO Heads of Government meet virtually last year during the tensions with China and it was attended by China. It is not yet clear whether BRICS Summit in 2021 will take place physically or virtually.
The group was formalised as BRIC in September 2006, during the 1st BRIC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which met on the sidelines of the General Debate of the UN Assembly in New York City.
After a series of high-level meetings, the 1st BRIC summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia on 16 June 2009. BRIC group was renamed as BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) after South Africa was accepted as a full member in September 2010.
BRICS is an important grouping bringing together the major emerging economies from the world, comprising 41% of the world population, having 24% of the world GDP and over 16% share in the world trade.
Over a period of time, BRICS countries have come together to deliberate on important issues under the three pillars of political and security, economic and financial and cultural and people to people exchanges.
6.Israel launches "green pass" for people with vaccination certificate
Israel has launched a coronavirus "green pass" system, which allows people who have been vaccinated to access public facilities that would otherwise be off limits.
As of Sunday COVID-19 inoculation is a sort of status symbol in Israel. Israelis who have gotten both Pfizer vaccine shots and those who have recovered from the virus get a "Green Pass" certificate in the form of a QR code or printout for people without smart phones. The pass allows entry to gyms, swimming pools, hotels, entertainment venues and sporting events. Restaurants and bars will be added to the list since March.
Businesses caught breaking the rules will be fined and the government is threatening to jail Israelis who forge green passes.
Around half of Israel's 9 million residents have gotten at least one shot since the government's vigorous inoculation campaign kicked off in December. Vaccination enthusiasm has waned in recent weeks as increasing numbers of Israelis with health issues and concerns about long and short term side effects are avoiding inoculation.
Green Pass privileges and restrictions are raising legal and moral questions.
"We can definitely see such lawsuits coming: of employees, of people who say I want to go and see a concert and I'm discriminated. We have to remember that if the disease continues to spreading, it also ends up with bringing more violations of human rights. Not just the right of health but if people have to be in lockdowns again, their freedom of movement is violated but also their ability to work," said Aeyal Gross, a constitutional law expert of Tel Aviv University.
Within the coming weeks, non-vaccinated Israelis will reportedly be allowed entry to green pass venues after presenting negative coronavirus test results.
7. Boeing recommends airlines suspend use of some 777s after United incident
Boeing Co said it recommended suspending the use of 777 jets with the same type of engine that shed debris over Denver at the weekend after U.S. regulators announced extra inspections and Japan suspended their use while considering further action.
The moves involving Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines came after a United Airlines 777 landed safely in Denver on Saturday local time after its right engine failed.
United said the next day it would voluntarily and temporarily remove its 24 active planes, hours before Boeing's announcement.
Boeing said 69 of the planes were in service and 59 were in storage, at a time when airlines have grounded planes due to a plunge in demand associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The manufacturer recommended airlines suspend operations until U.S. regulators identified the appropriate inspection protocol.
The 777-200s and 777-300s affected are older and less fuel efficient than newer models and most operators are phasing them out of their fleets.
Images posted by police in Broomfield, Colorado showed significant plane debris on the ground, including an engine cowling from the 26-year-old plane scattered outside a home.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said itsinitial examination of the plane indicated most of the damagewas confined to the right engine, with only minor damage to the airplane.
It said the inlet and casing separated from the engine andtwo fan blades were fractured, while the remainder of the fan blades exhibited damage.
Japan's transport ministry ordered Japan Airlines Co Ltd(JAL) and ANA Holdings Inc to suspend the useof 777s with PW4000 engines while it considered whether to take additional measures.
The ministry said that on Dec. 4, 2020, a JAL flight from Naha Airport to Tokyo returned to Naha due to a malfunction in the left engine.
Japan Transport Safety Board said on Dec. 28 that it had found two of the left engine's fan blades were damaged, one froma fatigue fracture. The investigation is ongoing.
United is the only U.S. operator of the planes, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The other airlines using them are in Japan and South Korea, the U.S. agency said.
"We reviewed all available safety data," the FAA said in a statement. "Based on the initial information, we concluded that the inspection interval should be stepped up for the hollow fan blades that are unique to this model of engine, used solely on Boeing 777 airplanes."
Japan said ANA operated 19 of the type and JAL operated 13of them, though the airlines said their use had been reduced during the pandemic. JAL said its fleet was due for retirement by March 2022.
Pratt & Whitney, owned by Raytheon Technologies Corp, said it was coordinating with operators and regulatorsto support a revised inspection interval for the engines.
An official at South Korea's transport ministry said it was waiting for formal action by the FAA before giving a directive to its airlines. The U.S. agency said it would soon issue an emergency airworthiness directive.
Korean Air Lines Co Ltd said it had 16 of the planes, 10 of them stored, and it would consult with the relevant authorities.
In February 2018, a 777 of the same age operated by United and bound for Honolulu suffered an engine failure when a cowling fell off about 30 minutes before the plane landed safely. The NTSB determined that incident was the result of a full-length fan blade fracture.
Because of that 2018 incident, Pratt & Whitney reviewed inspection records for all previously inspected PW4000 fan blades, the NTSB said. The FAA in March 2019 issued a directive requiring initial and recurring inspections of the fan blades on the PW4000 engines.(Reporting by Jamie Freed in Sydney and David Shepards on in Washington; additional reporting by Eimi Yamamitsu and MakiShiraki in Tokyo, Joyce Lee in Seoul and Tim Hepher in Paris;Editing by Sam Holmes and Christopher Cushing)
8. China calls for reset in Sino-U.S. relations with Biden administration

Wang also urged Washington to respect China’s core interests, stop interfering in Beijing’s internal affairs and stop “conniving” with separatist forces for Taiwan’s independence.
“Over the past few years, the United States basically cut off bilateral dialogue at all levels,” Wang said in prepared remarks translated into English.
“We stand ready to have candid communication with the U.S. side, and engage in dialogues aimed at solving problems.”
Wang pointed to a recent call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Biden as a positive step.

16. Want to be an astronaut? Europe is recruiting for the first time in 11 years
Europe is to recruit new astronauts for the first time in 11 years as leading space-faring nations set their sights on missions to the Moon and, eventually, Mars.
The European Space Agency (ESA) is looking to add up to 26 permanent and reserve astronauts. It is strongly encouraging women to apply and is looking into how it might add people with disabilities to its roster to boost diversity among crews.
But it won’t be easy to land one of the coveted positions, it warned at a news conference on Tuesday.
First, ESA expects a “very high number” of applications to come in during the eight-week recruitment drive from March 31, Lucy van der Tas, ESA Head of Talent Acquisition, said.
Second, those whose applications are accepted will undergo a rigorous six-stage selection process that will take until October 2022.
“Candidates need to be mentally prepared for this process,” van der Tas said.
Adapting technology that enabled humans to be in space could open the opportunity for people with disabilities, Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti said.
“When it comes to space travel, we are all disabled,” Cristoforetti added.
Human space flight looks set for a revival.
After years in which the only launch site for crewed flights to space was Baikonur in the steppes of Kazakhstan, cooperation with private companies like SpaceX has raised prospects for more human missions.
Requirements for an astronaut job at ESA include a master’s degree in natural sciences, engineering, mathematics or computer science and three years of post-graduate experience.
“I think it’s a great opportunity ... It will be an opportunity to learn a lot about yourselves,” Cristoforetti said.
