Prime Minister Narendra Modi invites U.S. universities to open campus in India
India and the U.S. have agreed to strengthen collaborations between their higher education institutions, facilitate study abroad and explore opportunities for setting up campuses of premier American colleges in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump during their wide-ranging talks at the White House on Thursday (February 13, 2025) also recognised that the talent flow and movement of students, researchers and employees, has mutually benefitted both countries.
Courts can’t direct legislature to enact law a particular way: Supreme Court
The Supreme Court said the courts could not direct the legislature to enact a law in a particular manner. A bench of Justices B.R. Gavai and Augustine George Masih made the observation while hearing a plea against a February 2024 order of the Delhi High Court which disposed of a PIL on the issue. “The Parliament, after considering every aspect, has come out with a new enactment. In a writ jurisdiction, neither the high courts nor the Supreme Court can direct the legislature to enact a law in a particular manner,” the bench said, while refusing to hear the plea.

Home Minister Amit Shah asks Maharashtra to implement new criminal laws in police commissionerates
Union Home Minister Amit Shah asked the Maharashtra government to implement the three new criminal laws in all police commissionerates of the State as soon as possible, officials said. Chairing a review meeting in New Delhi on the implementation of the criminal laws in Maharashtra in presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mr. Shah also said that the Maharashtra government should create a Directorate of Prosecution in accordance with the new criminal laws.

U.S. plane carrying 119 deportees likely to land in Amritsar on February 15
A U.S. plane carrying 119 illegal immigrants is likely to land at Amritsar airport on February 15, the second such batch of Indians deported by the Trump government as part of a crackdown it resolved to carry out when it was sworn in last month. According to official sources, the plane is expected to land at the airport around 10 p.m. on Saturday (February 15, 2025).
Ranveer Allahbadia moves Supreme Court against lodging of FIRs
The Supreme Court said the plea of influencer Ranveer Allahbadia against the FIRs lodged against him over his alleged distasteful comments during a programme on YouTube will be taken up in two-three days. A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar told Abhinav Chandrachud, appearing for the influencer, that it does not allow oral mentioning of cases for urgent listing. Reciprocal tariffs by U.S. may not hurt India much: GTRI
The U.S. government’s move to impose reciprocal tariffs to match higher duties levied by its trading partners is not likely to hurt India much as there are differences in the export profiles of the two countries, economic think tank GTRI said on Friday (February 14, 2025). Citing an example, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that if the U.S. charges 50% reciprocal tariffs on Indian pistachios because India charges the same, India is happy as it does not export pistachios. Additionally, for 75% value of the U.S. exports to India, the average tariff is less than 5%, GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said.

Russian drone attack damages Chernobyl nuclear plant’s shelter, Ukraine’s Zelenskyy says
A Russian drone caused significant damage to the radiation containment shelter at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday. Mr. Zelenskyy and the UN’s energy watchdog both said that radiation levels remained normal after the incident, which came as top U.S., Ukrainian and European officials gathered at the Munich Security Conference to discuss the war in Ukraine.
National Games closing ceremony: India ready to host 2036 Olympics, asserts Amit Shah
The closing ceremony of the 38th National Games began in Haldwani with Home Minister Amit Shah as its guest of honour asserting that the country is well on track to host a successful Olympics in 2036. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha declared the Games closed before handing over the flag to Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, the State that will host the next edition of the Games. “I can say it today that India has a very bright future in sports. We are ready to host the Olympics in 2036,” Shah said in his address referring to India’s bid to host the Olympics in 2036 that is still in early stages.
