Global Day of Parents 2021 – June 1

The United Nations(UN)’s Global Day of Parents is annually observed across the globe on 1st June to honour and appreciate the parenthood throughout the world.

The day also highlights the parents commitment to children and their sacrifice towards nurturing the relationship between parents and children.

ii.The first ever Global Day of Parents was observed on 1st June 2013.


World Milk Day 2021 – June 1

World Milk Day is annually observed across the globe on June 1 to create awareness about milk and to highlight the importance of milk and dairy products as a global food.

The day aims to celebrate the dairy sector across the globe and to promote the activities connected with the milk and milk industry.

• The theme of World Milk Day 2021 focuses on Sustainability in the dairy sector with messages around the environment, nutrition and socio-economics.


World Blood Cancer Day 2021 – May 28

World Blood Cancer Day is annually observed across the globe on 28th May to mark their support to the people with Blood Cancer. World Blood Cancer Day was created by the DKMS in 2014.


Blood and Bone Marrow Cancer:
i.
Most blood and bone marrow cancer are also called hematologic cancers which start in the bone marrow, the source of blood.
ii.Types: The three major types of blood and bone marrow cancer are

• Leukaemia

• Lymphoma

• Myeloma

iii.Therapy and treatment: Some of the most common treatment for blood and bone marrow cancer are,

• Stem cell transplantation

• Chemotherapy

• Radiation therapy


Amnesty International Day 2021 – May 28

Amnesty International Day is annually observed on 28th May to mark the establishment of Amnesty International, an international non-governmental organization focused on human rights, based in London, the United Kingdom(UK). Amnesty International was founded in 1961, following the publication of the article “The Forgotten Prisoners” by the lawyer Peter Benenson in “The Observer” newspaper on 28th of May 1961.

About Amnesty International: Amnesty International is a worldwide organisation for the protection of the rights of prisoners of conscience.
Objective: To conduct research and generate action to prevent and to eliminate the violation of human rights and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated.

Awards:

i.Amnesty International was honoured with the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize “for worldwide respect for human rights.”
ii.The organisation received the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights in 1978.

 

Harsh Vardhan Won WHO Director-General Special Award For Efforts In Tobacco Control

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has awarded Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan with ‘WHO Director-General Special Award’ for his accomplishments in the area of tobacco control.

• Harsh Vardhan was awarded for recognizing his efforts in the 2019 national legislation to ban E-cigarettes & heated tobacco products.

Note:

i.World No Tobacco Day 2021 was celebrated on 31st May 2021.

ii.The 2021 theme and campaign of World No Tobacco Day is “Commit to Quit”.

 

Aashritha V Olety Becomes India’s 1st Woman Flight Test Engineer

Aashritha V Olety, an officer of the Indian Air Force (IAF) became the first and the only woman in the history of IAF to ever qualify as a flight test engineer.

• She will be responsible for evaluating aircraft and airborne systems before their induction into the armed forces.

• She has graduated as part of the 43rd Flight Test Course.

• There are only 275 graduates to have ever cleared the course since its inception in 1973.


J B Mohapatra Becomes Interim Chairman Of CBDT

On 31st May 2021,Jagannath Bidyadhar Mohapatra (J B Mohapatra), a 1985-batch Indian Revenue Service officer, was appointed as the interim chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

• He will succeed Pramod Chandra Mody whose extended tenure ended on 31st May 2021.

• The appointment was made by a competent authority of the Revenue Department.

• He is appointed for a period of three months or till the appointment of a regular chairman, whichever is earlier.

 

T V Narendran Elected As New President Of CII

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has elected Tata Steel Ltd Chief Executive Officer(CEO) and Managing Director(MD) T.V. Narendran , as its President for the year 2021-22.

• He will succeed Uday Kotak,MD & CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd, who has completed his term.

About T.V. Narendran:
i.
T.V. Narendran was the Chairman of CII Eastern Region during 2016-17.
ii.He has also led CII National Committees on Leadership and Human Resources besides being Chairman of CII Jharkhand.

 

2021 ASBC Asian Boxing Championships held in Dubai – India’s Sanjeet Kumar & Pooja Rani wins Gold

Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Asian Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships was conducted between in Dubai, UAE. The event was organised by Boxing Federation of India (BFI) in association with UAE Boxing Federation.

i.The 19-member Indian contingent ended up with their best ever tally of 15 medals.

ii.Previously, the Tournament was planned to be conducted in New Delhi, but shifted due to the prevailing pandemic situation.

‘PM- CARES for Children’ scheme launched to support children against COVID-19

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a new scheme under ‘Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES Fund)’ for children who affected in COVID-19. Children who have lost both parents or surviving parent or legal guardian/adoptive parents due to Covid 19 will be supported under PM-CARES for Children’ scheme.They are

• Child will get a fund of Rs 10 lakh when they turn 23.

• Children under 10 years and Children between 11 to 18 years will be given admission to any Central Government schools or in private schools.

• The children can get loan for their higher education, and PM cares will pay interest.

• Free health insurance will be given to the children till 18 years.


74th World Health Assembly of WHO Held Virtually

74th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) of World Health Organization (WHO) held virtually from Geneva, Switzerland amid COVID-19, from 24th May to 31st May 2021.The theme of the 74th WHA is “Ending this pandemic, preventing the next: building together a healthier, safer and fairer world”.

Mrs.Dechen Wangmo, Health Minister of Bhutan has been elected as the President of the 74th WHA.

Target – To achieve vaccination of at least 10% of the population of all countries by September,2021 and at least 30% by the end of 2021.

 

January 30 Declared as World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day

During 74th WHA, January 30 was unanimously adopted as ‘World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day’. The proposal was submitted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). WHO has devised new road map for 2021–2030 to end NTDs.

 

HK Dwivedi Becomes West Bengal’s Chief Secretary;Alapan Bandyopadhyay Becomes Chief Advisor To West Bengal’s CM

The 1988 IAS batch officer Hari Krishna(HK) Dwivedi has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of West Bengal.Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) invoked Rule 6(I) of the Indian Administrative Service (cadre) Rules, 1954 to place the services of West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay with the Government of India.

• Hari Krishna Dwivedi has been appointed by the central government.

• He is currently serving as the Home secretary of West Bengal.

 

Alapan Bandyopadhyay Appointed as New Chief Advisor to CM of West Bengal

Meanwhile, Alapan Bandyopadhyay has been appointed as New Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister(CM) of West Bengal.

• Alapan Bandyopadhyay has been appointed for a period of three years by Mamata Banerjee.

• He has been previously serving as the chief secretary of West Bengal and retired on 31st May 2021.

 

Other Appointment – B.P. Gopalika was appointed as the Additional Chief Secretary (Home).

Rule 6(1) of the Indian Administrative Service (cadre) rules, 1954 states: A cadre officer may, with the concurrence of the state governments concerned and the central government, be deputed for service under the central government or another state government or under a company, association or body of individuals, whether incorporated or not, which is wholly or substantially owned or controlled by the central government or by another state government.

Eminent Author, German-American designer & Illustrator, Eric Carle passed away at the age of 91 in Northampton, Massachusetts, United States (U.S.). He was well known for his picture book, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, which was translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies.He was born in Syracuse, New York, United States (U.S.).
