J&K’s first Assembly session on Nov. 4: All eyes on NC’s likely resolution on Article 370, L-G’s address

All eyes are on Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s address and the ruling National Conference (NC) resolution on Article 370, as Jammu and Kashmir is all set to witness its first Assembly session on November 4 after a gap of six years, which also saw the downgrading of the erstwhile State of J&K into a Union Territory (UT).

Through collective spirit, we will keep working towards TB-free India: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (November 3, 2024) said the decline in TB incidence is an outcome of India’s dedicated and innovative efforts, and asserted that “we will keep working towards a TB-free India” through a collective spirit. His remarks came in response to a post by Health Minister J.P. Nadda in which he stated that the World Health Organization (WHO) has recognised India’s “remarkable” progress, with a 17.7% decline in TB incidence from 2015 to 2023 - a rate more than double the global decline of 8.3%.

Grenade attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar injures 10

Several shoppers were injured as suspected militants detonated a grenade in a busy Sunday market near Srinagar’s Tourist Reception Centre (TRC). An official said at least ten injured were shifted to hospital with splinter injuries. Officials said militants tossed a grenade towards the busy market. It exploded with a bang, causing panic among shoopers. The market is in high security zone.

SC to hear Delhi govt’s plea against vesting LG with power to appoint lawyers on November 4

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday (November 4, 2024) a plea by the Delhi government challenging the Centre’s decision to vest in the LG the power to appoint government lawyers. A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar is likely to hear the matter.

No forward movement on four names reiterated by Collegium headed by Justice Chandrachud 

There has been no forward movement on the names reiterated by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud for appointment as high court judges as he demits office as the chief justice of India on November 10. The collegium had in January 2023 reiterated the names of advocates Saurabh Kirpal for elevation as a judge of the Delhi High Court, R John Satyan as judge of the Madras HC, and Amitesh Banerjee and Sakya Sen as judges of the Calcutta High Court.

The financial aspects of the comprehensive upgrade to the first batch of SU-30MKI jets are being worked out and the process would start as soon as it is approved, a senior official of the Indian Air Force said. It can take around five to seven years to update the batch of 84 jets, and the IAF has taken up pilot projects with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in regard to Artificial Intelligence-based engine and asset maintenance solutions, as well as for spares and inventory optimisation, he added.

First Asian Buddhist summit to be held in Delhi from November 5 to 6

The Government of India, in collaboration with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), is holding the first Asian Buddhist Summit (ABS) in the national capital. With less than two days to go for the pivotal presidential election in the U.S., reputable pollsters in the country have called the race a “dead heat”. In opinion polls held nationally and very recently, Vice-President and Democrat Kamala Harris was narrowly ahead of former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump by a single percentage point (48.5% to 47.6% on average, according to pollster Nate Silver). These polls include those by NBC News and Emerson College projecting a 49%-49% tie nationally, Ipsos giving Ms. Harris a three-point lead (49%-46%) and AtlasIntel a two-point lead (50%-48%) to Mr. Trump. But the margins were even closer in the seven “battleground” States that could decide the winner of the electoral college and therefore the next President.

Taiwan detects 37 Chinese aircraft near island

Taiwan said it detected 37 Chinese fighter jets, drones and other aircraft near the self-ruled island on Sunday as Beijing carried out “long-distance” training flights. Major cement manufacturers reported a decline in margins in the September quarter, mainly on account of lower prices, leading to lower sales realisation. Barring three leading cement producers — UltraTech Cement, Ambuja Cement, and Dalmia Bharat — other smaller players, including Nuvoco Vistas Corp, JK Cement, Birla Corporation, and Heidelberg Cement, reported a decline in topline and sales volume in the second quarter of the current fiscal year.

Death threat asking Yogi Adityanath to resign: Mumbai police arrest woman

The Mumbai police have arrested a 24-year-old woman for allegedly giving a death threat to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, an official said on Sunday, November 3, 2024. The woman, identified as Fatima Khan, who has done BSc in Information Technology, resided in Ulhasnagar area of neighbouring Thane district of Maharashtra with her family members. Her father is in the timber business, the official said.
