SC orders status quo in Sambhal mosque well row, issues notice to Centre, ASI
Ordering a status quo, the Supreme Court on Friday (January 10, 2025) asked the Uttar Pradesh authorities, the Archaeological Survey of India and others not to take steps over a “private well” near the Mughal-era Jama Masjid mosque in Sambhal. Considering a plea of the management committee of Shahi Jama Masjid, Sambhal, a bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar issued notices to the Centre, the director general of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Sambhal district magistrate and other private individuals from the Hindu side led by Hari Shankar Jain.

The ‘sardar’ of workers of the coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, where eight miners remained trapped, was arrested, even as a dewatering exercise continued in the quarry to facilitate the resumption of rescue operations, police said on Friday (January 10, 2025). The fate of the trapped miners appeared to be grim with personnel involved in the rescue operations racing against time to bring them out of the ill-fated quarry, while the body of one labourer, hailing from Nepal, has been recovered from there, an official said.
