Belgium authorities confirm India’s extradition request after Mehul Choksi’s arrest
Belgian authorities confirmed that they have Mehul Choksi, the fugitive diamond businessman, in custody after he was arrested over the weekend. He is wanted, along with his nephew Nirav Modi, in a case by Punjab National Bank alleging loan frauds worth more than ₹13,578 crore. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been pursuing his extradition since 2018 when he left the country. Mr. Choksi is an Antiguan citizen at present, and had moved to Belgium a few years ago, reportedly for cancer treatment.
Tahawwur Rana asked for pen, paper, Quran; NIA questioning him for eight to ten hours daily
Mumbai terror attacks key mastermind Tahawwur Hussain Rana is being interrogated for eight to ten hours daily by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths to unravel a larger conspiracy behind the dreaded strikes, official sources said. The NIA officials are ensuring Rana’s medical check-up and he is being allowed to meet his lawyer, according to the order of a Delhi court that had on early Friday (April 11, 2025) morning granted 18-day custody to the probe agency following his extradition from the U.S., they said.
Major banks cut lending, deposit rates following RBI’s repo rate cut
Major banks have cut their lending and deposit rates following Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) 50 basis points cut in repo rate in 2025. The largest private sector bank HDFC Bank cut its deposit interest rates by 25 basis points. A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage.

Centre frames draft rules for gas meters
The Consumer Affairs Ministry has framed draft rules for gas meters under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, which make it mandatory for all gas meters used for domestic, commercial, and industrial purposes to undergo testing, verification and stamping prior to their use in trade and commerce. “The re-verification of these gas meters is also prescribed under the rules to ensure their correctness when these are in use,” the Centre said in a press release here on Monday.
SC to hear matter related to tree felling in Hyderabad's Kancha Gachibowli forest on April 16
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on April 16 a matter in which it had asked the Telangana government to explain the "compelling urgency" for clearing a large tree cover on a land parcel next to the University of Hyderabad. While taking suo motu cognisance of the deforestation activities in the Kancha Gachibowli forest, the apex court on April 3 directed that until further orders, no activity of any sort, except the protection of the trees already existing there, shall be undertaken by the state or any authority.
