Retail inflation eases to five-month low of 4.31% in January
India’s retail inflation cooled to a five-month low of 4.31% in January from 5.22% in December 2024, with food prices rising 6%, compared with an 8.4% rise in the previous month, which also marked the slowest uptick since August 2024. The price rise faced by urban consumers in January dropped sharply to 3.87% — below the central bank’s 4% median target for inflation. For rural consumers, inflation remained above the 4% mark at 4.64%, but this was still significantly lower than the December pace of 5.8%.
New Income Tax Bill to have 622 pages, 536 sections
A crispier and simplified Income Tax Bill 2025, with 536 sections and 23 chapters running into 622 pages, will likely be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Thursday (February 13, 2025). The Bill once enacted will replace the six-decade-old Income Tax Act 1961, which over the years became bulkier and complex with amendments.

Mumbai reports first GBS death, death toll rises to 8 in Maharashtra
A 53-year-old male patient has died of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) at a hospital in Mumbai, Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai Bhushan Gagrani said on Wednesday (February 12, 2025). This is the first death reported in Mumbai due to GBS, taking the total death toll in Maharashtra to eight.

Judicial officers’ pension: Unified pension scheme notified, Centre tells Supreme Court
The Centre on Wednesday (February 12, 2025) informed the Supreme Court that it recently notified the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) which might address the concerns of judicial officers. A bench of Justices B.R. Gavai and Augustine George Masih heard the submission made by the Centre’s counsel. Attorney General R. Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for the Centre and apprised the bench about the UPS. SC said no child will be discriminated against, on plea for Rohingya access to public schools
No child will be discriminated against in education, the Supreme Court said on Wednesday (February 12, 2025) while fixing for next week a plea seeking a direction to the Centre and the Delhi governments to grant Rohingya refugees in the city access to public schools and hospitals. The court just wants to know where these Rohingya families are living, in whose house and what are their particulars, a Bench of Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh said while making the the no discrimination in education point.
United Nations reports grave rights violations in Bangladesh protest response
Officials from Bangladesh’s former government and security apparatus systematically committed serious human rights violations against protesters staging mass demonstrations last summer, the U.N. human rights chief said on Wednesday (February 12, 2025). Presenting the report of a fact-finding mission, High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk told reporters in Geneva that crimes against humanity may have been carried out amid a climate of fear and mass arrests.
