Labourers trapped in ‘flooded’ Assam coal mine
At least half a dozen labourers are feared trapped in a flooded coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. There is no clarity on how water seeped into the mine but a preliminary police report, citing some locals, said four to six workers have been trapped inside the pit since about 8 a.m. on Monday. The spot is about 30 km from the nearest police station at Umrangso and takes about seven hours to reach from Haflong, the district headquarters.

Eight jawans of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and a civilian driver were killed after Naxals blew up their vehicle with a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Monday (January 6, 2025), police said. This was the biggest strike by Maoists on security forces in the state in the last two years and the first assault in 2025.

United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Monday (January 6, 2025) that the United States is finalising necessary steps to remove barriers in India-United States civil nuclear cooperation. The United States is finalising steps to remove roadblocks to the civil nuclear partnership with Indian companies, he said in New Delhi on Monday (January 6, 2024). He said the formal paperwork for this will be done soon. The move will allow India to access restricted technology in the U.S. Washington and New Delhi have been discussing the supply of U.S. nuclear reactors to energy-hungry India since the mid-2000s.
