India, China to resume direct flights, issue visas
Three months after negotiating an end to the military stand-off at the Line of Actual Control (LAC), India and China agreed to concrete measures to resume direct flights, visas, a number of exchanges, and the Mansarovar Yatra for pilgrims this summer. They also agreed to resume the dialogue on trans-border rivers and sharing of hydrological data, that China has withheld for years.
PM Modi speaks to President Trump on phone, says committed to a trusted partnership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (January 27, 2025) spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump and said, both sides will work for “global peace” and “security”. The conversation came a week after Mr Trump was sworn to office for his second term in a glittering ceremony in Washington DC where External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar participated as the representative of the Government of India.
Foreign Secretary Misri meets Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, currently on an official visit to Beijing, on Monday (January 27, 2025) met with the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Mr. Misri is also slated for a meeting with his counterpart. Mr. Wang called on the two countries to “explore more substantial measures to promote mutual understanding and support”, according to a report by CGTN, the English news channel of the state-run Global Times.
EAM Jaishankar embarks on 3-day visit to UAE
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday (January 27, 2025) embarked on a three-day visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to further enhance India’s comprehensive strategic partnership with the influential Gulf nation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Mr. Jaishankar will meet the leadership of the UAE to review the close partnership between the two countries.
Uttarakhand rolls out UCC for all except Scheduled Tribes and natives who migrated
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday (January 27, 2025) officially rolled out the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for all the residents of the State, except for the Schedule Tribes and natives who have migrated out of the State. With this, Uttarakhand has become the first Indian State to implement the UCC post independence.

Gaza ceasefire: Israel allows Palestinians to return to north Gaza for the first time in over a year
Israel on Monday (January 27, 2025) began allowing thousands of Palestinians to return to the heavily destroyed north of the Gaza Strip for the first time since the early weeks of the 15-month war with Hamas, in accordance with a fragile ceasefire. The opening was delayed for two days over a dispute between Hamas and Israel, which said the militant group had changed the order of the hostages it released in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Mediators resolved the dispute overnight.
Sniper rifle among 35 weapons recovered in Manipur
A sniper rifle was among 35 weapons recovered in a series of joint operations by the security forces in Manipur since January 19, 2025. The raids were conducted in the hills and valleys of the ethnic conflict-hit State. A statement by the Defence said the Army, the paramilitary Assam Rifles, and State Police personnel recovered a modified sniper rifle, five 9mm pistols, two single-barrel rifles, grenades, ammunition, and war-like stores during an operation in the Lungkhongjang ridge in Bishnupur district on January 19, 2025.
Senior Pakistan journalist arrested under terrorism charges
Police in Pakistan’s Punjab province has arrested a senior journalist under terrorism charges for terming the “murder of Punjabi officers legal.” Razish Liaqatpuri, a former editorial in-charge of daily Khabrian and writer of several books, was arrested on Saturday (January 25, 2025). Razish belongs to Rahim Yar Khan district, some 400km from Lahore. The journalist has also been booked under various Sections of Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
Torch rally in Pithampur to oppose Bhopal gas waste disposal
Several outfits opposed to the disposal of waste connected to the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy in Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh‘s Dhar district held a torch rally on Sunday (January 26, 2025). On the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984, highly toxic methyl isocyanate gas leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide factory in Bhopal, killing at least 5,479 persons and leaving thousands with serious health problems and long-term disabilities.
