ISM Dhanbad best in country, 79 Indian institutes rank in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025

The Indian School of Mines (ISM) University, Dhanbad bags the top position in India in Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2025. As many as 79 Indian institutes feature in the 15th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad is ranked 20th globally for Engineering – Mineral and Mining, making it the country’s highest-performing subject area, followed by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) in the Engineering and Technology subject and Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (deemed to be university) in Dentistry subject at 26th rank.

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad is ranked 27th for Business and Management Studies.

IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and the University of Delhi each feature 29 entries in the 2025 rankings. Among them, IIT Bombay stands out as the strongest performer in absolute terms, with 12 subjects improving.

US universities dominate in 32 academic disciplines, with Harvard University emerging as the strongest-performing institution, securing the top spot in 15 subjects. MIT follows closely, leading in 11 disciplines.

In the UK, institutions claim the number one position in 18 subjects, with the University of Cambridge excelling in four.

The Netherlands and Italy are also among the select locations with the world’s top-ranked programs. Sapienza University of Rome retains its number-one position in Classics and Ancient History, while the University of Amsterdam leads in Communication & Media Studies, and Wageningen University & Research holds the top spot in Agriculture & Forestry.

Hong Kong SAR sees remarkable representation, with The University of Hong Kong ranking within the top 200 in 55 subjects—the highest among all institutions. It also recorded the most ranking improvements this year, with 47 subjects rising, while The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) followed closely with 43 increases.

China stands out for having the highest number of new subject entries this year. Sun Yat-sen University and Xiamen University each added 13 subjects to their rankings. Meanwhile, Peking University saw 43 of its 50 ranked subjects improve, tying for the second-highest number of increases worldwide.
